What is an Intimate Wedding?
An intimate wedding, sometimes called a micro wedding, is a celebration built around closeness instead of scale. Think 20 to 75 guests, not 200. Instead of a hotel ballroom, picture an art gallery in Manhattan, a wood-paneled private club, or an estate tucked into the hills of the Hudson Valley or the Berkshires. The guest list shrinks, but nothing else does. The emotion and the details are often more pronounced, not less. Everyone is more relaxed,, more focus is put on the experience, the quality of the food and even the entertainment. Yes, there is still ritual, tradition, and yes, there is dancing. At the core, the wedding doesn’t change much at all, just the experience; it’s more focused and appreciated.
Why we photograph and absolutely love Intimate Weddings
I've spent years photographing intimate weddings (And elopements) across New York City, the Hudson Valley, and the Berkshires, and I keep coming back to them for one reason: intimacy. I want to feel the day, and I love watching the couple, their friends, and family feel the day in ways they can’t at a large-scale wedding. The couple isn’t being pulled from one event to the next. They can stop, look around, and absorb the day fully.
At a wedding with 40 guests instead of 200, we’re not chasing a schedule; Everyone is more present. We can catch the quiet looks between partners before they walk down the aisle, and the unscripted laughter at a small dinner table. These are the moments that get lost in the noise of a large event, and they're the moments we love to capture.
Why are couples choosing to have an Intimate Wedding?
More couples are trading the 200-person guest list for a smaller, more meaningful day, and it's not just about budget. Intimate weddings allow for:
A more relaxed wedding celebration
Access to smaller, more unique venues that couldn't accommodate a large wedding
More creative freedom with photography, styling, timeline, and season
And most importantly, a day that feels personal instead of performative
